Leaking Shower in Byron Bay? What's Behind the Wall

A leaking shower has one of three causes: a worn tap or shower head, failed waterproofing or grout, or a leaking pipe inside the wall. The first is a simple repair. The other two are hidden, keep doing damage while nobody can see them, and need a plumber to find the source before anything is fixed.

The quickest way to tell them apart is where the water appears. A drip from the shower head stays in the shower. Water that turns up on the other side of the wall, on the floor outside, or on the ceiling below is coming from somewhere it cannot be seen.

Jesse from JF Plumbing Group traces hidden shower leaks in homes across Byron Bay, Suffolk Park and the wider Northern Rivers.

How to fix a leaking shower

Fixing a leaking shower starts with finding where the water escapes, because the repair is different for each cause.

  • Dripping shower head or tap: usually a worn washer or cartridge. The same parts fail in basin taps, and Jesse's guide to fixing a dripping tap explains what is involved.

  • Water escaping through tiles, grout or the shower base: the waterproofing layer under the tiles has failed. Resealing the surface is rarely a lasting fix.

  • Water coming from inside the wall: a pipe or fitting behind the tiles is leaking and needs to be located and repaired.

How do I know if my shower is leaking behind the wall?

A shower leaking behind the wall leaves signs outside the shower itself. Look for these:

  • Paint bubbling or peeling on the wall that backs onto the shower

  • Swollen skirting boards, door frames or cabinetry nearby

  • Damp or lifting flooring outside the bathroom

  • A musty smell or mould that keeps coming back

  • The sound of water running when every tap is off

In Byron Bay's humidity, damp timber and plaster stay wet for longer, so mould and rot set in faster than they would in a dry climate. Timber-framed and timber-floored homes, common along this stretch of coast, are the most exposed.

Why is there a water stain on the ceiling below the bathroom?

A water stain on the ceiling under a bathroom almost always means water is escaping from the shower, bath or pipework above. The stain marks where the water ends up, not where it starts. Water runs along framing before it drops, so the leak may be some distance from the mark.

How do you tell if it is the pipes or the waterproofing?

Timing is the clue. A pipe under pressure leaks all the time, whether the shower is in use or not. A waterproofing failure only leaks when the shower is running and water hits the tiles.

A water meter test helps confirm it. Turn off every tap and appliance, then watch the meter. If it keeps moving, a pressurised pipe is leaking somewhere on the property. Jesse walks through the full meter test in why did my water bill suddenly spike.

When to call a plumber

Call a plumber as soon as water shows up anywhere outside the shower. Hidden leaks do not stay small, and the repair grows with the damage.

Jesse uses acoustic and thermal leak detection to find the source without pulling tiles off on a guess. Once the leak is located, the repair can be kept to the area that needs it. JF Plumbing also provides leak detection reports for insurance claims.

If the waterproofing has failed across the whole shower, the honest answer is often a rebuild of that area, with a waterproofer and tiler working alongside the plumber. Jesse's guide to what the plumbing involves in a bathroom renovation covers what to expect.

FAQ

Can a leaking shower cause structural damage?

Yes. Water that soaks into wall frames and flooring over time can rot timber and damage plaster, which is why early detection matters.

Will resealing the grout stop a shower leak?

Only if the grout is the sole problem. If the waterproofing under the tiles has failed or a pipe is leaking, new grout or silicone will not stop it.

Can a plumber find a leak without removing tiles?

In most cases, yes. Acoustic and thermal detection can locate a leak behind a wall before any tiles come off.
