Blocked Toilet? How to Clear It, and When It's a Sign of a Bigger Problem
To clear a blocked toilet, stop flushing immediately, then use a flange plunger with firm, steady strokes for 20 to 30 seconds. If the water level drops, flush once to test. If it rises again, or the toilet blocks repeatedly, the problem is almost never the toilet itself. It's further down the line, and plunging won't reach it.

How Do I Fix a Blocked Toilet?
Work through these steps in order:
Stop flushing. A second flush on a full bowl is how bathroom floors get flooded. If the water is near the rim, wait ten minutes; a partial blockage often drains slowly on its own.

Plunge properly. Use a flange plunger (the type with the rubber sleeve that extends from the cup), not a flat sink plunger. Get a full seal over the outlet, push down slowly to expel air, then plunge firmly for 20 to 30 seconds. The pull stroke does as much work as the push.
Test with a half flush. If it drains normally, you're done. If it drains slowly or backs up, move to the next section, because the blockage is beyond the toilet.
How to Unblock a Badly Blocked Toilet Without a Plunger
No plunger in the house? Two methods work on minor clogs:
Hot water and dishwashing liquid. Squirt a generous amount of dishwashing liquid into the bowl, then pour in a bucket of hot (not boiling) tap water from waist height. The detergent lubricates, the water pressure and heat break down paper. Wait 15 minutes, then test flush. Never use boiling water; it can crack the porcelain.
A toilet auger. A hand-cranked toilet auger from any hardware store reaches about 1.5 metres into the pan and physically breaks up the clog. It's the most effective DIY tool for a badly blocked toilet.
Skip the chemical drain cleaners. Caustic products rarely shift a solid toilet blockage, they damage older pipes, and they make the job more hazardous for whoever ends up clearing it properly.
Why Does My Toilet Keep Blocking?
A toilet that blocks once is bad luck. A toilet that blocks every few weeks is a symptom, and in the Northern Rivers the usual suspects are:
Tree roots in the sewer line. The single most common cause of repeat blockages in this region. Will a blocked toilet eventually unblock itself? Sometimes. Paper-only clogs can soften and pass within a few hours. Anything solid, wipes, or a downstream obstruction won't clear on its own, and repeated flushing risks an overflow.
