Hot Water Systems
Types of Hot Water Systems We Install and Repair
Electric Hot Water Systems
The most common system in older Northern Rivers homes. Storage tank units heat and hold water ready for use. They're affordable to install but cost more to run than gas or heat pump alternatives. If your electric system is over 10 years old and constantly running out of hot water, it's worth comparing running costs against a heat pump upgrade.
Gas Hot Water Systems
Gas systems come in storage tank and continuous flow (instantaneous) options. Continuous flow units heat water on demand so you never run out, and they're more energy efficient than storage tanks. Rinnai Infinity and Bosch Highflow are the most popular units we install across the Northern Rivers. You'll need a natural gas connection or LPG bottles.
Solar Hot Water Systems
The Northern Rivers gets some of the best solar exposure in NSW, making solar hot water a strong option. A roof-mounted collector heats water during the day and stores it in an insulated tank. Most systems include an electric or gas booster for cloudy days and high-demand periods. Higher upfront cost but significantly lower running costs long term.
Heat Pump Hot Water Systems
Heat pumps extract warmth from the air to heat water, using around 60 to 75% less electricity than a conventional electric system. They work well in the Northern Rivers climate because they perform best in mild to warm conditions. Government rebates and STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates) can significantly reduce the upfront cost. This is the system we recommend most often for homeowners looking to reduce energy bills.
Diagnosis and Assessment
We assess your current system, check the fault, and give you a clear explanation of whether it can be repaired or needs replacing. If replacement is the better option, we'll walk you through the system types that suit your property, household size, and budget. No pressure to upgrade when a repair will do the job.
Installation and Replacement
We supply and install all major brands including Rheem, Rinnai, Bosch, Dux, Thermann and Solahart. We handle the full job from disconnecting and removing your old unit, installing the new system, connecting plumbing and electrical or gas lines, and testing everything before we leave. Compliance certificates are provided for all regulated work.
Repairs and Servicing
Leaking valves, faulty thermostats, pilot lights that won't stay lit, elements burning out. Most hot water repairs are straightforward and can be completed the same day. We carry common replacement parts to avoid callbacks.
How JF Plumbing Handles Hot Water Jobs

Hot Water Services by Location
We service the entire Northern Rivers region from our base in Lennox Head. Here is what we typically see in each area and how quickly we can get to you.
Hot Water Systems Ballina
Older homes in Ballina are predominantly running electric storage tanks nearing end of life. We're seeing a lot of homeowners switching to heat pump systems to cut power bills. Typically on site within 30 to 45 minutes.
Hot Water Systems Byron Bay
Byron Bay has a mix of residential and commercial hot water needs, from holiday rentals needing reliable continuous flow systems to cafes and restaurants requiring high-capacity commercial units. Heat pump and solar are popular choices given the area's sustainability focus.
Hot Water Systems Lennox Head
Our home base. Newer developments tend to have gas continuous flow or heat pump systems already installed. The older homes closer to the village are where we see the most replacements needed. On site within 15 to 20 minutes.
Hot Water Systems Lismore
Lismore has the highest search volume for hot water systems in the region. Many properties had water heaters damaged or aged by the 2022 and 2024 floods. If your system has been underperforming since the floods, it may have sustained damage that's reducing efficiency and lifespan.
Signs Your Hot Water System Needs Attention
Water not heating to full temperature or running out quickly
Rusty or discoloured water coming from hot taps
Leaking around the base of the tank or from the pressure relief valve
Unusual noises like banging, popping or rumbling from the unit
Pilot light keeps going out on gas systems
Energy bills spiking without changes in usage

Frequently Asked Questions About Hot Water Systems
Most systems last 8 to 15 years depending on the type, water quality, and how well they've been maintained. Electric storage tanks tend to sit at the lower end, while gas continuous flow and heat pump units can push toward 15 years with regular servicing.
Heat pumps are the cheapest to run, using 60 to 75% less electricity than conventional electric systems. Solar is a close second. Gas continuous flow is cheaper than electric storage but more expensive than heat pump. The right choice depends on your property, household size and whether you have gas connected.
Yes. Heat pump and solar hot water systems are eligible for STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates) which reduce the upfront cost. The rebate amount varies based on your location and system type. We can provide details on current rebate values when quoting.
A straightforward like-for-like replacement takes 2 to 4 hours. Changing system types (for example, electric to heat pump) may take longer if additional plumbing, electrical, or structural work is needed. We'll give you a clear timeframe when quoting.
